Student mentoring practice

At HNW Architects we are invested in nurturing the young and emerging talent of our profession. It is of great importance to us that we support and engage the next generation of architectural students and technologists within the construction industry, particularly following these Covid challenged times. We are proud as a practice to be supporting a variety of initiatives to help the new stars of tomorrow.
Since opening our studio in Brighton & Hove in September we have been mentoring three Part 1 students from the University of Brighton, helping them understand the industry, assisting with their portfolios and sharing live projects with them. It has been a great opportunity for us to nurture and support future architects. Even though our technical mentoring time has finished, we are still in contact with those three mentees to offer our support and knowledge with their careers. It has been really rewarding to hear that our support has made a difference:
I am extremely fortunate to have been given HNW Architects as a part of the RIBA mentoring scheme. I have been continually supported and guided through feedback and had invaluable conversations on my design projects. I would also like to thank HNW for giving me insight into some of the projects they are currently working on, and what to expect once I have graduated and start working within a practice

As well as supporting the Part 1 architecture students at the University of Brighton, we have also been invited to take part in their Part 2 crits. We really enjoyed constructively contributing to their design thinking and have been hugely impressed with all they are accomplishing. It has also given us some great insight into the topics of conversation and the ideas of how students view the developing world of architecture. We are delighted to be forging strong links with the students and preparing them for working in industry next year.

In Chichester we continue to grow and develop our long standing relationship and support to the University of Portsmouth School of Architecture students and also regularly have School and College work experience student visit us for a week to give them a taster of the architecture profession, as well as researching and producing a theoretical design project. We’ve recently had a third visit from the same student, it has been great to see how their skills have developed over this time, as well as their outlook and interest within the profession. We have a host of other work experience students booked in to spend some time at the practice, and we are looking forward to seeing and hearing their ideas when they join us.
I had a great time at HNW Architects on my work experience week. Every day I had a different tutorial for different softwares and did a project about the pavilion in Priory Park. The staff were really supportive and helpful.
